A local project can go very far. GvSIG is the case, a Geographic Information System (GIS) based free software. We developed five years ago Valencian public and private entities and used, among other things, to locate water points in the district of Kigoma, Tanzania, near the border with Burundi.
"We can create maps that shows the coverage of water for every 1,000 inhabitants. With what wells, taps and streams have protected, what quality is and to what degree can access it. We used to detect what are the most vulnerable populations in a very graphic, "said Daniel Morales, coordinator of the project undertaken by Engineers Without Borders at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia has been responsible for training in the use of the technical program to Tanzania.
GvSIG born of a competition of the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Generalitat Valenciana drawing European funds in 2003, won by companies Iver and Prodevelop and its development was overseen by the University Jaume I of Castellón.
From this year, free distribution and the possibility to modify it to suit different objectives have been gvSIG registering property in Peru (which facilitates consultation of citizens), to services to fight forest fires in Trieste (Italy) and Sezana (Slovenia), the Department of Health and Environment of the City of Munich (which I will start using this year) and other international destinations, as stated in the fourth conference on gvSIG held in Valencia.
The program has been introduced in the training of engineering students University of Rennes (France). And it is planned to extend another of its variations (simplified, without the tools of the original complex) to colleges and institutes Valencia for kids to learn to use a geographical information system. The prototype has been included in Lliurex, the Linux distribution created by the Valencian Government that is slowly being introduced into the education system.
gvSIGThis version includes games for students to learn, for example, municipalities locate, identify and distinguish the regions landforms. It has also been exported, in this case, the Canary Islands.
